I would like to raise $1,000 for Homes For Our Troops by October 8th. That is the date for the next Ridgeline Half-marathon in Castle Rock. The race that nearly did me in.
A half-marathon is 13.2 miles. The Ridgeline half-marathon is a trail run that has the runner climbing up steep hills or trying to avoid rocks and roots on the steep descents. In other words, a very technical race far beyond my limited running skills.
I strained my left calf at the 1.5 mile mark and my right calf at the 2 mile mark. Instead of quitting like a saner man would have done, I ran the rest of the 11 miles on 2 bad wheels.
After the race I hobbled over to a bench and sat for about 20 minutes trying to figure out how I was going to make it another 40 yards to my car. Both legs locked up from the ankles to the knees.
Long story short, I had two category 2 calf strains, meaning that I had torn up to 90% of each calf muscle and was just a step away from a total tear.
I am out for revenge this year as it took me 7 weeks of rehabbing before I could run again.
I would never compare a weekend race gone wrong to what these soldiers have gone through. All I know is that it took everything I had to finish the race. I would like to know that what I am doing may inspire you to pledge a couple of dollars for a great cause. You will be able to see the results on my website, http://bigmanruns.com.
Homes for Our Troops Mission:
To build mortgage-free, specially adapted homes nationwide for severely injured Veterans Post-9/11, to enable them to rebuild their lives.
Homes for Our Troops (HFOT) is a privately funded 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization building specially adapted, mortgage-free homes nationwide for the most severely injured Veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan. Most of these Veterans have sustained injuries including multiple limb amputations, partial or full paralysis, and/or severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). These homes restore some of the freedom and independence our Veterans sacrificed while defending our country, and enable them to focus on their family, recovery, and rebuilding their lives.
Since its inception in 2004, nearly 90 cents of every dollar donated to Homes for Our Troops has gone directly to their program services for Veterans. HFOT builds these homes where the Veteran chooses to live, and continues its relationship with the Veterans after home delivery to assist them with rebuilding their lives.
Please join me in my efforts to support this wonderful organization!
