The American Legion Riders Sykesville Post 223 will hold its 5th Annual Bike Show to benefit Home for Our Troops on April 29, 2017, at Vanessa’s Corner Pub located at 2600 W. Liberty Road, Taylorsville, Maryland, from Noon to 4:00 p.m. This event is open to the public and free for spectators.

The day will begin with a flag raising ceremony over Liberty Road with flag and crane. The Young Marines of Carroll County will be on hand to present the colors. Maryland’s 911 Rolling Memorial will be on display.

Motorcycle entries will be accepted from Noon to 2:00 p.m. when the judging will begin. The cost to register a motorcycle is $15 and includes several classes sure to suit the needs of all. There will be three trophies in each class as well as a People’s Choice Award. Everyone in attendance is invited to vote for their favorite.

Even if you don’t ride, there’s still plenty of ways to support the event. We will have a lovely basket raffle with contents donated by local businesses and Legion members. The drawing will take place for our $2,500 cash give-away and Hybrid Gas and Charcoal Grill. Come out for lunch as a portion of Vanessa’s take for the day will be donated to the cause.

Our day will culminate with the presentation of trophies followed by a check presentation to Homes for Our Troops to be accepted by Army Sergeant Lyndon Sampang.

Sgt. Sampang was deployed to Afghanistan with the 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division at Ft. Campbell, K.Y. During that deployment, on March 18, 2010 in Paktika Province, the vehicle SGT Sampang was riding in was struck by a rocket propelled grenade (RPG). He sustained severe injuries to his right leg and shrapnel in his left leg. His right leg was eventually amputated below the knee.

His current home is located on a hill, making it difficult for him to do outdoor activities with his children. The stairs to the second floor are problematic when he needs to tend to his children. A mortgage-free, specially adapted home from Homes For Our Troops, built on one level with an open floor plan, will resolve these issues for Lyndon. The accessibility and freedom he will have in the new home will also allow him to focus on staying physically fit and being an active member of his community. Lyndon’s home will be built in Gettysburg, PA.

ABOUT HOMES FOR OUR TROOPS
Mission:
To build and donate specially adapted custom homes nationwide for severely injured Post-9/11 Veterans, to enable them to rebuild their lives.

Homes for Our Troops (HFOT) is a privately funded 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization building specially adapted, mortgage-free homes nationwide for the most severely injured Veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan. Most of these Veterans have sustained injuries including multiple limb amputations, partial or full paralysis, and/or severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). These homes restore some of the freedom and independence our Veterans sacrificed while defending our country, and enable them to focus on their family, recovery, and rebuilding their lives.

Since its inception in 2004, nearly 90 cents of every dollar donated to Homes for Our Troops has gone directly to their program services for Veterans. HFOT builds these homes where the Veteran chooses to live, and continues its relationship with the Veterans after home delivery to assist them with rebuilding their lives.

ABOUT AMERICAN LEGION RIDERS
American Legion Riders chapters are well known for their charitable work, which has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for local children's hospitals, schools, veterans homes, severely wounded service members and scholarships.

Please join me in my efforts to support this wonderful organization!

Best-

Steve
