In 2014 I didn't know what Homes for Our Troops was, but I knew that I wanted to run the Walt Disney World Half Marathon and I thought that by registering to run for a charity I'd have extra motivation to train for 13.1 miles. I picked HFOT off a list of approved charitable organizations, it was a completely random occurrence. However, that moment of happenstance has led me to learn so much about an incredible organization that is doing amazing work.
It's now 2016 and I'm preparing to celebrate the 100th birthday of the National Parks Service by flying to Colorado and running the Rocky Mountain Half Marathon. I'm no longer raising money for HFOT as motivation to train, I'm running to give my fundraising a personal touch. I am raising money for HFOT because I believe strongly and truly in the mission statement of Homes for Our Troops to: build mortgage-free, specially adapted homes nationwide for severely injured Veterans Post-9/11, to enable them to rebuild their lives.
Homes for Our Troops (HFOT) is a privately funded 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization building specially adapted, mortgage-free homes nationwide for the most severely injured Veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan. Most of these Veterans have sustained injuries including multiple limb amputations, partial or full paralysis, and/or severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). These homes restore some of the freedom and independence our Veterans sacrificed while defending our country, and enable them to focus on their family, recovery, and rebuilding their lives.
Since its inception in 2004, nearly 90 cents of every dollar donated to Homes for Our Troops has gone directly to our program services for Veterans. HFOT builds these homes where the Veteran chooses to live, and continues its relationship with the Veterans after home delivery to assist them with rebuilding their lives.
I can run on my own, but I can't support this amazing organization without your help. Please take a moment to watch some of the amazing, inspirational videos that I have tagged on this page, and then donate to my efforts. You'll be helping me Run the Rockies, but more importantly, you'll be helping this amazing charity continue to do their incredible work.
